Curriculum
CORE COURSES
The two-year residential programme consists of core business management
courses in the first year followed by industry and functional specific
electives in the second year. Second year students can opt to specialize
in Pharmaceutical, Hospital or Health Insurance Management
Introduction to the Health Sector
Develops an appreciation of the structure and current issues in the healthcare
system and the broad context within which the health sector operates
Public Health
Examines the scope and approaches of public health which includes
prevention of epidemics and spread of disease, protection against environmental
hazards, prevention of injuries and promotion of positive health behaviour,
response to disasters and assisting communities in recovery; and quality
and accessibility of health services as a healthcare safety net.
Information Management in Healthcare Systems
Designed to examine developments in information technology & their
impact on the healthcare sector, evaluate how technologies are incorporated
in the healthcare process and design possible systems to address health
problems
Legal Framework of Business & Health Law
Designed to examine how the regulatory framework affects the
organization of the healthcare sector and its working and structure and
draw up contracts in compliance with the law
Decision Sciences
Designed to develop the competence to structure & design
information gathering, use statistics to draw inferences from data and
communicate empirical evidence & conclusions
Research Methods
Develops the competence to frame issues in a decision situation,
identify the data required to address the decision questions and use quantitative
and qualitative tools to analyse the data and draw conclusions.
Economics
Develops an understanding of the macro-economic concepts & variables
that affect the health sector and their impact on resource allocation
and public health policy and of the demand for healthcare and health insurance,
consumer, physician and institutional behaviour and economic analyses
in healthcare decisions
Financial Management
Insight into the financial system and the planning and utilization
of an enterprise's financial resources. Students acquire a working knowledge
of cash flow projections, budgeting and control/evaluation techniques
for financial decisions like issue of securities, capital budgeting and
structure, cost of capital, valuation, dividend policy, short/long term
financing and firm performance
Financial, Cost & Management Accounting
Designed to equip students with the competence to use information from
cost and financial accounting statements to make business decisions and
evaluate the impact of business decisions on accounting statements
Organisational Behaviour
Explores managerial roles, power styles and conflict with respect to organizational
structures, processes and develop an understanding of a person's role
in an organizational context
Human Resource Management
Addresses the development of evolving systems that support business
objectives and foster effective working relations between employees and
managers
Marketing
Emphasises the customer focus in the working of a healthcare organization
and draws on the marketing concepts of marketing mix, strategy and plan
to examine the application of the customer focus in a health care organisation
Production & Operations Management
Provides an understanding of operations management applied to healthcare
and develops the ability to identify opportunities and apply theoretical
concepts to provide value, keeping the customer as the focus
Quality Management
Designed to help students understand different perspectives on quality,
evaluate quality management tools in the context of a customer focus and
examine emerging trends in global competitiveness
Strategic Management
Equips the learner to challenge conventional wisdoms and to develop coherent
and credible alternative future scenarios that could lead to more effective
ways of providing healthcare to patients. Designed to develop research,
analytical and critical judgment skills to deal with complexity, risk,
strategic option development, portfolio management and strategic resource
allocation
